Supporting JDRF

So many times people reach out to me and ask how we knew that our
kids…all three…had type 1 diabetes. Frantic moms and dads, who notice something different with their child, ask me the warning signs. They are praying their child will not be diagnosed with diabetes too. I have asked God, over and over, why my husband and all three of our children were given this disease. I find peace in believing that perhaps it is to help others.

Knowing the warning signs for type 1 diabetes could save a life. The
symptoms can occur suddenly….take a minute and read them:

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Sugar in urine
  • Fruity or sweet odor on breath
  • Increased appetite
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Drowsiness, lethargy
  • Heavy, labored breathing
  • Stupor, unconsciousness

If you or someone you love exhibits one or more of these symptoms, call a doctor immediately. Each year approximately 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes; over 15,000 are children. That’s 40 children diagnosed each and every day.

I am proud that Vintage Couture has joined with for our third season to give back to JDRF. Through this partnership 3% of the net profits from each sale of ’s collection will be donated to the JDRF. My family has been affected by type 1 diabetes….let’s stop it before it affects a family you love.

Together we will find a cure.

JDRF is the worldwide leader for research to cure type 1 diabetes. It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide.

The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump - each day, every day of their lives.

And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its potential and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke and amputation.

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.6 billion to diabetes research, including $116 million in FY2010. More than 80% of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. 3% of the net profits from each sale from ’s collection are donated to JDRF.
